RESURRECTION

Famed director Romeo Castellucci returns to Festival d’Aix-en-Provence after the 2019 success of Requiem, a unique operatic production of Mozart’s iconic requiem mass. The new production is a striking meditation on the exhaustion and disappearance of all things and addresses, rather spectacularly, the question of the aftermath— the question of a hypothetical renewal. Inside the iconic Stadium de Vitrolles, a fascinating black concrete cube set against a red canyon abandoned just four years after its 1994 inauguration, Castellucci tackles the enigma of a mysterious rebirth with Resurrection, undoubtedly the most popular of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies. The extraordinary operatic staging of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony includes over 70 dancers and actors and France’s leading symphony orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, with its 180-member chorus helmed by famed Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. The sensational opera is evocative of hope for—and the realisation of— a remarkable renewal after a pandemic winter.

Abu Dhabi Festival’s support for the production continues the rich history of collaboration with Festival d’Aix-en-Provence
