Making of Series: Captain Abdullah and Talin in conversation on the making of Sediments

18 March, 2022 @ 6:00 pm

Marine biologists and environmentalists explore the shifting social/physical landscapes as well as creating and preserving modes of togetherness. Talin Hazbar’s work formally investigates the intrinsic properties of natural material – such as sand and porcelain in other artworks – and here tunes her ear to the society of Gulf fishermen. Hazbar excavates used nets from the sea, as a monument not only to the fishing practices but also to the disruption they’ve caused to the natural world.

Talin Hazbar

Born in Aleppo in 1988, Talin Hazbar grew up in Sharjah and works across architecture, art and design. She holds a bachelor of architecture degree from the American University of Sharjah 2012, and took part in the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Emerging Artists Fellowship program in collaboration with Rhode Island School of Design – RISD, Abu Dhabi 2015 and Tanween Design Program, Tashkeel, Dubai 2015.

Hazbar’s work is connected to the surrounding landscape and its intricate materiality. She works within natural systems, experimenting with materials to understand their behaviour and recall natural built structures. Her work allows for organic growth within a certain set of controlled parameters, while also enabling unpredictable moments to exist. The transformation of materials – whether towards growth or decay – lets Hazbar understand the state of temporality that exists around and within us.

She utilises her study of architecture to contribute towards redefining material experimentation, understanding the context of landscapes and implementing the research processes in art.

Talin Hazbar was exhibited in “Co-Lab: Contemporary Art and Savoir Faire” at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, 2018;  Warehouse421in Abu Dhabi; Dubai Design Week; Design Days Dubai; the Third Line Gallery; Art Dubai; 1971 Flag Island Sharjah; and Beijing Design Week.
